3 Advances in Women’s Healthcare Available to You Right Now

advances in women's healthcare

Women’s healthcare has come a long way over the years. In fact, while ultrasound technology was first invented in the late 1800’s, the first ultrasound used in obstetrics wasn’t performed until 1958. It then took 30+ more years for ultrasound technology to evolve into how it’s used today in obstetrics and gynecology.

It’s mind-boggling to think how little expectant mothers knew about the health of their fetuses compared to today. It’s just as mind-boggling to realize women probably didn’t know much at all about the health of their reproductive organs. At least, not until ultrasounds were introduced as a part of modern medicine and women’s healthcare.

Ultrasounds are just a small piece of the puzzle. There are now so many other procedures and technologies available to women in order to help them know and care for their bodies. Here are three other incredible advances in women’s healthcare you should know about.

3 Amazing Advances in Women’s Healthcare Available to You Today

1. Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows your doctor to look inside your uterus in order to diagnose and treat the causes of abnormal bleeding (among other conditions). This procedure is done using a hysteroscope, a thin, lighted tube that is inserted into the vagina to examine the cervix and inside of the uterus.

Hysteroscopy can be either diagnostic or operative:

    • Diagnostic hysteroscopy is used to diagnose problems of the uterus.
    • If an abnormal condition was detected during the diagnostic hysteroscopy, an operative hysteroscopy can be performed at the same time, avoiding the need for a second surgery.

Hysteroscopy are performed in-office at Copperstate OGYN.

2. NovaSure® Endometrial Ablation

The NovaSure treatment utilizes technology to deliver customized ablation to each patient. The device is inserted through the cervix to the uterus and emits precisely measured radio-frequency energy to safely remove the endometrium, the uterine lining that sheds during a period.

What Does It Do?

The NovaSure endometrial ablation procedure is a simple way to reduce or stop menstrual bleeding for women with AUB (abnormal uterine bleeding). It’s a quick procedure that can be done right in your doctor’s office!

3. da Vinci Robotic Assisted Hysterectomy

This procedure is a hysterectomy (a surgery to remove a woman’s uterus). However, it’s done using top-of-the-line surgical equipment known as the da Vinci surgical system.

The da Vinci surgical system helps enable your surgeon to perform minimally invasive surgery with an advanced set of instruments and a 3D high-definition view of the surgical area. Additionally, it’s used in a variety of urology and gynecology procedures. But one of the areas where it’s most effective is in performing a hysterectomy.

This is because studies have shown that using this system reduces the number of complications associated with hysterectomy for benign conditions. Those same studies suggest patients who had this procedure with da Vinci may experience fewer complications compared to patients who had regular open surgery.
