Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes can sometimes be attributed to hormone surges during pregnancy and therefore is not always an indicator of your pre-pregnancy health. That being said, women who eat healthy, exercise daily, and watch their glucose levels are often at a lower risk. Screening for gestational diabetes is routine for all pregnant women and is a simple way to make sure you and your baby are receiving the best care. Continue reading “Gestational Diabetes”

Dr. Carranza-Chahal Featured in The New York Times

Dr. Carranza-Chahal

“Physicians are raising awareness of the reproductive toll that work stress, long hours, sleep deprivation, and years of training can exact.” – Jacqueline Mroz, Journalist for the New York Times

One of these physicians bringing awareness to these is our very own Dr. Carranza-Chahal. Her personal journey of becoming a mother in the medical profession makes her an incredible advocate for women.

“I consider myself a fierce advocate for all women as they work to achieve their personal and professional goals.  I personally understand the challenges that professional women face when trying to grow their families, including the tasks of maintaining a healthy pregnancy, grieving our pregnancy losses, and the momentous task of being a mother, Dr. Carranza-Chahal shares.

“I am excited to listen to our patients’ concerns, provide great care, and help find the best solution to reach their fertility goals.  Sometimes extra assistance is needed to achieve conception, and for this reason, I offer ovulation induction and intrauterine insemination in our office at Copperstate OB/GYN,” Dr. Carranza-Chahal explains.

In her feature with The New York Times, she discusses her personal experience and her goal of increasing visibility and community resources for this issue.

What to Expect at Your First Trimester Blood Screening

Tests and screenings are common when you’re in your first trimester. They check the health and wellbeing of your baby. Providers often suggest a 11-week blood test, which checks for chromosomal conditions your baby may have. This blood test can also reveal your baby’s sex!

So, why do providers suggest this screening in the first place? First trimester screenings and tests let you know your baby is healthy. In this article, we’ll go over what to expect from your 10-week blood test.

Rh-Negative vs Rh-Positive Blood Factors

One of the first things your healthcare provider wants to test when you’re pregnant is your blood type and Rh blood factor. It’s a common screening usually done during the first prenatal visit. You need to know whether your blood type is Rh-positive or Rh-negative.

It’s important because even though your baby grows inside you, there’s a chance you and your baby have different blood types. Your healthcare provider will want to know you and your baby’s Rh blood types to determine if you need special care. Continue reading “Rh-Negative vs Rh-Positive Blood Factors”
